Dessert wines have high levels of sugar in them with between 3-28% residual sugar and are known for their noticeable sweetness. There isn't a simple definition of what makes a Dessert wine a Dessert wine. Each country has its own interpretation of what makes a wine a dessert wine and when to consume it. In the United Kingdom, a Dessert wine is classified as anything that is served at the end of a meal. In the United States, a Dessert wine is any wine that contains over 14% alcohol by volume. Regardless of where a Dessert wine is produced, all Dessert wines are generally sweet, full of flavor, thicker, richer, and slightly stronger than an average table wine. Dessert wines pair especially well with a wide range of desserts, scrumptious sweets, and fruit. Pairing a Dessert wine with food can be tricky. A good general rule for pairing Dessert wine with food is to always serve a Dessert wine that is slightly sweeter than the food. Some people find Dessert wines to be so sweet that they skip dessert and just enjoy a luscious Dessert wine.
Dessert wines are quite often more expensive due to the difficulty in making them, the specific and infrequent conditions required to harvest suitable grapes, and the low amount of juice that is yielded from them. Dessert wines are produced in many different regions and in different ways. The majority of Dessert wines are produced from grapes that are picked after the normal harvest time for the grape, known as Late Harvest. Dessert wines are typically sold in half-bottles and are served in a small glass with approximately 2 ounces per pour. The smaller glass helps direct the wine to the back of the mouth so the sweetness of the Dessert wine doesn't overwhelm the drinker. White Dessert wines are best served chilled, but not icy cold or the subtleties will be lost. Red Dessert wines are best served at room temperature or slightly chilled. The ideal conditions for storing Dessert wines are dark and remain between 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Dessert wines should be stored on their side to prevent air from getting into the bottle and spoiling the wine.
