Sangiovese is planted worldwide and is the most widely planted red grape variety in its homeland of Italy. At the turn of the 21st century Italy was the leading source of Sangiovese with 172,500 acres planted, followed by Argentina with 6,928 acres, then Romania with 4,200 acres, then the Corsica region in France with 4,109 acres, then California with 3,387 acres, and Australia with 1,087 acres. Sangiovese grapes are thin-skinned, purple in color and ripen late in the season. Sangiovese wine grapes require a long growing season with sufficient warmth to ripen fully. Some techniques used to improve the quality of Sangiovese wines include extending the maceration period from 7 - 12 days to 3 - 4 weeks to provide more time in contact with the grape skins. Sangiovese wines have naturally high acidity and moderate alcohol content which allows it to pair well with many different types of foods. Some of the best food-pairings with Sangiovese wines are chicken, red meat, fish, lamb, pork, tomato-based pasta, stew, pizza, and well-aged cheese.
Sangiovese is a red wine that is medium to full-bodied. Sangiovese wines are typically blended with varying percentages of other red wine varieties. The vast majority of Sangiovese wines are intended to be consumed relatively early while some have the potential to be aged. Super Tuscans and Brunello di Montalcino are premium Sangiovese wines with the longest aging potential of up to 20 years and may require 5 to 10 years to develop before they drink well. New world Sangiovese wines show a relatively short window of drinkability with most examples being consumed within 3 to 4 years after harvest. Sangiovese wines typically have bouquets / flavors of blueberry, strawberry, orange peel, plum, violet, and thyme. Sangiovese wines processed / aged in light oak have bouquets / flavors of vanilla and sweet wood. Sangiovese wines processed / aged in heavy oak have bouquets / flavors of oak, smoke, toast, and tar. Sangiovese wines processed / aged with spice have bouquets / flavors of cinnamon and clove.
