Syrah also known as Shiraz is grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine. In 2004 it was estimated that Syrah was the world's 7th most grown grape. France grows more than half of the world's Syrah. Syrah was first introduced to California in 1878 but did not become popular until later. In 1984 there was less than 100 acres of Syrah with followed by a large growth in 2010 with over 19,000 acres statewide in California. Syrah is a dark thick-skinned grape that produces deep violet almost black wines with a chewy texture and richness. Because of the mid-palate, fleshy fruit many countries use Syrah as a blending grape in red wines to balance the weakness of other varieties. Syrah ripens mid-season and requires heat to get fully ripe but it can lose varietal character when even slightly overripe. Syrah wines pair well with grilled meats, grilled vegetables, richly flavored red meat, beef stew, wild game, lamb, sausages, barbecue, black olives, dishes with lots of black pepper, as well as meat lover's pizza.
Syrah produces medium to a full body wines with aromas that tend to be more spicy than fruity. Due to the concentrated flavors and high tannin content many premium Syrah wines reach their peak after several years of bottle aging. Less-extracted Syrah wines may be enjoyed early for the smooth tannin structure and berry characteristics. Syrah wines are known for bouquets and flavors of black currant, blackberry, black cherry, plum, grass, black pepper, bell pepper, licorice, clove, thyme, bay leaf, sandal wood, and cedar. Flavors / bouquets of Syrah wine differ depending on how the wine is processed. Wines processed / aged in light oak often have flavors / bouquets of vanilla, coconut, and sweet wood. Wines processed / aged in heavy oak have bouquets / flavors of oak, smoke, toast, and tar. Bottle aged / processed Syrah wines tend to have bouquets / flavors of cedar, cigar box, earth, and leather. The land and temperature also impact Syrah wines with bouquets / flavors of musk, civet, truffle, and earth.
