Zinfandel has thrived in California since the mid-1850's and is now considered to be practically indigenous to the state. The popularity of Zinfandel peaked during the final two decades of the 19th century when it was the most widely planted grape in California. The world's oldest Zinfandel vines are growing in California. There are more than 32,000 acres of Zinfandel planted across California making it one of the most popular grape varietals in the state today. Zinfandel grapes are thin-skinned and red in color with clear juice. The grapes ripen fairly early and produce juice with high sugar levels. Zinfandel grape vines are quite vigorous and grow best in climates that are warm but not too hot, because the grapes might shrivel in hot weather. If weather conditions permit, Zinfandel grapes may be late-harvested to make dessert wine. Zinfandel wines taste great on their own or paired with a variety of foods like lamb, beef, outdoor-grilled steaks or chops, meat that has been stewed with or stuffed with fruit, poultry, game and some fish.
Zinfandel wines are typically full-bodied with medium to high tannin levels and high alcohol content but are also made in light-bodied styles with fresh-forward berry flavors. Zinfandel wines are made to be consumed young, within three to five years of the vintage. The feature bouquets / flavors of Zinfandel wines are blackberry, raspberry, cherry, boysenberry, licorice, cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, and herbs. The ripeness of the grape, weather, soil and how the wine is processed / aged all have an impact on the bouquets / flavors of the wine. Zinfandel wines processed / aged in light oak have bouquets / flavors of vanilla, coconut, and sweet wood. Zinfandel wines processed / aged in heavy oak have bouquets / flavors of oak, smoke, toast, and tar. Zinfandel wines that have been processed / aged in the bottle have bouquets / flavors of musk, mushroom, earth, leather, cedar, and cigar box. Zinfandel wines processed / aged using carbonic maceration have bouquets / flavors of tutti-frutti, candy, and bubblegum.
