Halloween doesn’t have to be scary, but it does need sweet treats. Every year on October 31st, you can look out of your window to see little kids dressed as goblins and princesses, going to door to door carrying their bags to collect their candy. Whether you’re going trick-or-treating, partying the night away in your costume, or staying in, make sure to stock up on candy for both you and your neighbors.
The History of Trick-or-Treating
While there are many theories on how Halloween and the tradition of trick-or-treating came to be, many agree that Halloween once looked very different than it does today. In 19th century Europe it is believed that people would go door-to-door in costumes for the holiday, much like we see today. However, rather than shouting “trick-or-treat” when their neighbors answered the door, the people in costume would recite verses in exchange for food. However, if they were denied or made to feel unwelcome they would warn of misfortune among the household.
Though Halloween’s roots run deep into Europe’s history, the holiday and its tradition of “trick-or-treating” did not enter North America until the late 1920’s. Even though the American traditions of the holiday maintain many of the same practices as we see today, the traditions were still a little different. During this time adults didn’t load up on packaged chocolate at the local Costco, but instead, they would give the kids different types of treats from homemade cookies to small toys. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that candy manufacturers began to promote their goods for the holiday.
