DIY Mother’s Day Breakfast Tray
Supplies needed:
Wood board, approximately 11.25"w x 19.75"h x .75" thick
Paint color(s) of your choice
Paintbrush(es)
3" drawer pulls/handles of your choice
Tools needed:
Sandpaper
Measuring Tape
Pencil
Drill
Screw Gun
Directions:
1. Make sure your wood board is sanded so that all of the rough edges and sides are smooth, and wipe off sawdust with a damp cloth.
2. Paint your wood board with your chosen paint color; make sure you paint both sides of the board, allowing time to dry between coats as specified on the bottle of paint.
3. Place your chosen handles on the backside of the tray where you think they look best and use your measuring tape to mark (roughly) how far they are from the short edge of the tray. Remove one and set it aside, and work with only one handle for now. Note that your handle will attach to the board via screws being screwed through the wood and into the holes on the bottom of your handle. The line you draw parallel to the short edge should mark where you want those screw holes to line up, not just the outer edge of the handle, so measure carefully. Repeat this step for the other side.
4. After you mark the distance you want your handle to sit from the short edge, it’s time to find the center, that way your handle sits correctly on the board. Use your measuring tape to measure the width of the board, and, on your drawn line, mark where the center of the board is. Repeat this step for the other side.
5. Knowing that your handles’ screw holes are 3" apart, measure 1 ½" from center on either side of the dot, also on your line. These two dots will be where you drill your holes. Repeat this step for the other side. Double-check your measurements by placing the handles back on your board, lined up with your marks.
6. It’s time to pre-drill holes into the board to prevent the wood from splitting. Using a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the shaft of your screws, drill a hole where you’ve made your marks.
7. After your holes are drilled, it’s time to attach the handles. Holding one handle to the front of the tray, making sure that the screw holes are lined up with your drilled holes, send a screw through the hole and into the handle. Repeat this step three more times, for each of the screw holes on both handles. Voila! Your tray is ready to go!
